Sustainability
As one of the very few hotels in London (or indeed the world) that can say it is truly independent, our story is very much our own to write and comes straight from the heart. This enthusiasm has led to beehives on our roof and a chlorine-free swimming pool, as sustainability has always been a byword for us rather than a buzzword.
MINDFUL FROM THE VERY START
Since we opened our doors in 1998, One Aldwych has had an innate sense of responsibility for the environment and world around us. We strive to lead and innovate in energy saving features, including heat reclaim and water efficiency, as well as playing an active role in our community to nurture conscious and sustainable practices.
Team effort
Our passion for preserving the environment and enabling our guests to live better influences all of our operational decisions, although we appreciate there is always more that can be done. We are dedicated to continually seeking to evolve and improve in this area, and we empower the hotel’s entire team to suggest new ideas.
Recognition
We were honoured to be awarded the Luxury Eco Certification Standard (LECS) and are delighted to maintain the Gold accreditation from Green Tourism Business Scheme. This year we are renewing our commitment to social responsibility with a pledge to get greener as we work towards B Corp certification. This is about change in partnership with the planet.
Responsibility in action
One Aldwych leads the way in having a water-saving EVAC drainage system – a highly efficient vacuum drainage system which uses 70% less water than conventional flushing systems, for example toilets use only one litre of water per flush.
We have a water filtration and bottling plant on-site to eliminate single-use bottles and reduce carbon emissions in the transport of bottled water.
Our comprehensive recycling policy focuses on reducing, reusing and recycling at all times, and we made an active choice to remove all plastic straws and stirrers from the hotel.
In our kitchens, Head Chef Dominic Teague champions sustainable and local produce, whilst food waste is composted for biogas and fertiliser for local farms.
Our swimming pool is entirely chlorine-free with the water filtered through a mineral based system.
We manage the use and reduction of utilities, energy and water through our selection of equipment, energy management systems, policies and staff awareness. For example all lighting throughout the hotel is from energy efficient LED.
All glass bottles and food containers are crushed on-site and subsequently used in the construction industry as an alternative to asphalt and concrete.
We are proud to support two independent charities; homeless charity StreetSmart and Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity for seriously ill children.
Our rooftop beehives and a bee-friendly garden support the health of London’s urban bees – keep an eye out for honeycomb in your room.
